SPRING BRIDGE DRIVE Oakdale Golf Club Monday 17th March

Our first event of 2025, the Spring Bridge Drive, was held at Oakdale Golf Club on Monday 17th March. 38 ladies enjoyed an enjoyable day of bridge, with a light lunch, and a chance to catch up with friends. Prizes were baskets of Spring bulbs and the lucky winners were:

3rd prize Julie Hewson and Sue Ivory

Rachel Smith and Andrea Johnson called and made a small Slam!

Janet Brearley organised play on the day. The Raffle, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, the President’s Charity, raised £190. Thanks to everyone for their support

Match v Gents - 5th June at Rudding Park

Another closely fought battle against the Gentlemen on a showery afternoon at Rudding Park which, unfortunately we lost 4-6.
However, 5 of the 10 matches played went to the last hole so it was closer than it looks and may have been affected by several of the HDSLGC team having to battle round Saltburn GC in the County Foursomes the day before in wind, rain and hail. The last uphill drag on the 18th at Rudding may just have been a step too far!! We enjoyed a barbecue in the sunshine afterwards & mulled over missed putts & 'if onlys'!
Thank you to everyone who played in the team of 20 at this busy time of year. The Gents have agreed that we limit the team numbers to 20 for future matches as it has proved difficult for both sides to raise teams of more than that at this busy time of year.
We live to take them on again next year! Provisionally at Romanby GC, but date and venue to be confirmed.

Match v Durham - 30th July at Sharpley Springs GC

Our biennial match against the Durham Society was held on a warm and mostly sunny day at Sharpley Springs Golf Club - a new venue for most of the team. With views of the sea, it was a scenic and tricky course with very few flat putts! We were able to field a full team of 20 ladies who pulled off another magnificent 1 point victory with the vital half a point secured by the last team out to retain the Durham Shield for another 2 years.
Thank you to everyone who took part - it was a long but very enjoyable day.

Match v Northumberland - 28th August at Thirsk & Northallerton GC

Approaching the end of a very dry summer, a full team of 10 pairs took on the Northumberland Society at Thirsk & Northallerton GC. Thankfully, heavy showers on the day before the match had softened the course slightly but conditions were still fiery and unpredictable. Half the field were caught in several heavy downpours which, thankfully, didn't last long but were uncomfortable at the time.

The final result was a resounding 7.5 - 2.5 win for HDSLGC - thank you to everyone who took part at this extremely busy time of the season.

Autumn Meeting - 29th September at Bedale GC

We had splendid weather for the final golf meeting of the year at Bedale Golf Club. A very healthy 27 pairs took part, split into 2 divisions according to combined course handicaps. Many thanks to everyone at Bedale, particularly Kathleen Allison, who took care of registration and scoring.

AUTUMN BRIDGE DRIVE at Pannal Golf Club Monday 24th November

And so, we came to our final event of 2025 – the Autumn Bridge Drive held at Pannal Golf Club. On a damp November Monday, 40 members and guests enjoyed the camaraderie of an afternoon of Bridge, with a welcome lunch of soup and sandwiches. Prizes of “me-time’ gifts from H2K were presented to the winners:

2nd prize Susan Taylor and Gill Roberts
3rd prize Julie Hewson and Sue Ivory

There were no Slam calls so the final prize was awarded to Nearest to Zero, Gerry Callander and Liz Whitley.
